Ventilation installation in a private house: process, price, and advice

Ventilation installation is one of the most important decisions when building or renovating a new private house. A correctly performed installation ensures fresh air, low heating costs, and a healthy building for decades. In this article, we will explain, step by step, how the installation works, how much it costs, and what mistakes to avoid.
When is the best time to install ventilation?
The best time is during the construction phase when the framework is up, but insulation and ceilings are not yet installed – then hiding the ductwork is easiest. The system can also be built during renovation, but it requires more planning. Read more about installation in existing homes in ventilation renovation.
Installation process: 5 steps
1. Project and airflow calculation
Before installation, a ventilation project is prepared, which calculates the air requirement for each room and plans the ductwork route.
2. Ductwork installation
The ductwork is routed into ceiling structures and the technical room. Tight connections are important – every air leak reduces efficiency and increases energy consumption.
3. Ventilation unit installation
A heat recovery unit (e.g., Komfovent, Zehnder, Flexit) is installed in the technical room and connected to the ductwork. Read about choosing a unit: heat recovery ventilation.
4. Air distribution elements
Supply and extract diffusers are installed in the rooms according to the project.
5. Start-up and adjustment
The system is started up and airflows are adjusted according to the project. This step is critical – a poorly adjusted system is noisy and inefficient.

How long does ventilation installation take?
The installation of ductwork and a unit for a typical private house usually takes a few days. The work is often divided into two stages: ductwork before finishing and the unit after the walls are completed.
How much does ventilation installation cost?
- Heat recovery system (project + unit + installation): ~4000–9000 €
- Extraction system: ~1200–1600 €
- Installation work hourly rate: ~15–40 €/h
The price depends on the size of the house, the unit, and the complexity of the ductwork. See also the price overview: ventilation works and prices. For a personalized offer, contact us.
5 common mistakes to avoid
- Too small or too large a unit – incorrect power means noise or poor air exchange.
- Leaky ductwork – poor connections reduce efficiency.
- Uninsulated pipes in a cold room – condensation occurs.
- Unregulated airflows – the system does not work as per the project.
- Forgetting maintenance – a clogged filter ruins all benefits. See maintenance.
